Roman Iron Caltrops

Description

Ancient Rome, c. 1st-2nd century AD. A pair of Roman iron caltrops. Anti-cavalry weapon, these were spread around the outside of fortifications, to stop enemy horses in their tracks upon event of a siege. No matter how they sat on the ground, a sharpened spike was always sticking straight up. Rather poorly preserved, but good representative examples of a rarely-found Roman weapon. Each measures around 44 mm (1 3/4”). Ex-old British private collection.
