A Beatnick was a young person in the 1950’s or 1960’s who rejected normal rules and customers of the era. They showed this by dressing in unusual ways, loving jazz music and focusing on art and poetry instead of making money. The term came from The beat Generation – a group of famous writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. The suffix nik came from a newspaper writer in 1958 who added the Russian suffix nik from the satellite Sputnick to the word beat to make beatnik.
A Beatnik wore black clothes, berets, dark sunglasses and small goatee beards. They hung out in smoky coffee shops reading poetry out loud and listening to fast jazz. They hated greed, war and doing what everyone else did. They came right before the hippie movement of the late 1960’s.
