West German Pottery was produced from 1949 – 1990.  When WWII ended in 1945, the Allies divided up German territory between themselves into four zones: French, British, American, Russian/Soviet.  Then in 1949, Germany divided into West Germany & East Germany.  After austere years during the war, colour burst into design and in West Germany pottery manufacturers embraced colour and interesting shapes for their pottery and glazes.

During its hey day in the 1950’s until the 1970’s there were over 100 pottery and porcelain companies and studio potters producing art pottery in West Germany.  Some of the bigger companies included Scheurich, Carstens, Bay, ES & Dumler Breiden,  West German Pottery was exported worldwide and retailers such as David Jones in Australia sold their wares to those who wanted to furnish their homes with modern fashionable design.  Reds, orange, blue and brown were popular colours during the 1960’s and 1970’s.  Great design, form and function, never goes out of vogue and this pottery remains stylish, fashionable and collectable to this day.
