Description

Original circa 1912 unused postcard memoralising the sinking of the RMS Titanic on 15th April 1912, on its maiden voyage.  Following its collision with an iceberg late on the 14th April.  With a portrait of Mr Wallace Henry Hartley and a verse of The Last Hymn (Nearer My God To Thee), popularity accepted to have been played by the band as the ship sank.  The verse bears a description of the ship and the disaster.  The caption at the bottom of the postcard (produced by AGJ) refers to the SS Titanic (not MSS) and Maritime is misspelt.  Wallace Hartley was violinist and leader of the eight member band who all famously continued to play as the ship sank and went down with her.  He was born in 1878 in Colne, near Burnley, Lancashire, England.  He died aged 33.
