Empoli is a city/region 45 minutes from Florence, Tuscany, Italy. Glass manufacturing began there in the 1500’s. During the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s glass making in the Empoli Region hit an all time high, with orders flowing in from all over the western world. Decanters and vases were retailed by department stores across the USA, United Kingdom & exported to Australia.
Most households in Australia featured one of these genie bottles in the lounge or dining rooms. Commonly over the decades their stoppers were broken through accident. Those that survive intact, 50 – 60 years on are highly collectable today. Some even retain their original plastic corkscrew plugs, which do break down over time. Those that don’t have their plastic plugs, can have their stoppers firmly secured by wrapping a little sticky tape around the stopper, which will secure it tightly into the neck of the bottle. Genie bottles come in a variety of patterns – diamond, hobnail, bubble, ripple, ribbed and colours such as red, pink, amethyst, amber, blue and greens.
