Description
Dated 1581, this silver coin has been clipped. It did remain legal tender, so ‘an enterprising fellow’ has snipped a bit of silver off the side to save for a rainy day, then spent the coin. Gold was shaved from sovereigns for the same reason. Eventually all those little snips and shavings added up to… well… more than a ‘pretty penny’. Measuring 20mm the condition is not the best, with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth almost rubbed away, but this is reflected in the price. It’s a great entry level coin for a collector & certainly a way to hold a little piece of Medieval history in your hand.
