Description
Australian Comforts Fund (ACF) Appeal Day Charity Badge. Maker marked on the back: Angus & Coote, Sydney. The badge cost 20 shillings to purchase, which is a donation of around $85 in todays money. That goes a long way to explaining the design & intricate enameling. It features the Union Jack and Red Australian Ensign Flag, which was the official flag for Australian registered merchant ships, used by civilians on land and taken onto battlefields by soldiers. This ACF Appeal badge was possibly created and sold to raise funds on Jack’s Day during WWII. The Comforts Fund was originally established during WWI and again in 1940, during WWII. It raised funds to buy biscuits, clothing, tobacco, stationery for soldiers & personnel serving on the front lines. Badge measures approximately 2cm x 2cm.
Jack’s Day was first organised in 1918 by the King George V fund to raise funds for Naval servicemen, merchant sailors & their families, following WWI. The tradition continued during WWII.
