Frederick Grinnell was a pioneer in fire safety and was the creator of the first practical automatic fire sprinkler. Early in his career he was a construction engineer for railroad manufacturers. In 1869 he purchased a controlling interest in a company that manufactured fire extinguishing apparatus. Grinnell licenced & patented an automatic sprinkler from 1881 to 1890 and continued to improve it in the USA.
Wormald began in 1889 when Stanley Russell & Jos Wormald operating as Russell & Wormald ran an import business in Sydney selling sprinklers, fire extinguishers and fire doors as well as running an insurance company. Wormald has grown to become a leader in the industry. Both companies are still in business today.
