Deans Rag Book Company was established in 1903.  It began in the stationery industry – printing books, children’s games & washable cloth fabric books.  Dean’s always sold a premium product.  Those rag books for children back in the early 1900’s cost the equivalent of AU$50 each to purchase.  During WWI Deans saw a gap in the market left by the absence of European – mostly German – made plush toys.  They began to produce teddy bears and by 1922 they were making their first branded mohair teddy bears.  They also produced Golliwoggs, made famous in a series of children’s books by author Florence Upton.  She used her character to raise funds for an ambulance during WWI.  In 1972 Deans merged with Gwentoys and by 1986 owned by Plaintoy, their focus was on limited edition collector bears and gollys.  This tradition continued into the 1990’s and 2000’s.  Deans brand is now back in the UK, with manufacture focused on mohair limited edition teddy bears.
