Kevin O’Halloran was an Australian freestyle swimmer of the 1950’s who won a gold medal in the 4 x 200 metre freestyle relay at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Kevin led off and put Australia in the lead with an Olympic record time of 2 minutes 6.8 seconds, opening a gap of 0.7 seconds over the Soviet Union and 1.2 seconds over the United States. Australia won gold in a world record time of 8 minutes 23.6 seconds, almost 8 seconds ahead of the second place Americans and 13 ahead of the Soviets. The win made O’Halloran the first Western Australian to win any Olympic medal. In 1976 he died after tripping and accidentally shooting himself.
