This 15 piece set is around 120 years old – made circa 1890. A farmyard barn, farmer, two trees, twelve animals and the original handmade mesh bag have been lovingly hand carved, painted and the bag made by toy makers in Seiffen, Germany. Seiffen is a small German village set in a picturesque valley close to the Czech border inthe region known as Erzgebirge – the ore mountains.
When the miners weren’t digging for silver, they carved wooden toys to fill in time on cold nights. It gave rise to a whole new cottage industry in Seiffen- wooden toy making. Their toys are unique to the area, all hand carved, chiselled and elaborately crafted. They are made to last, as this unique set has – for more than 100 years.
Erzgebirge is the only place in the world where it is possible to qualify as a maker of wooden toys!
