Vegetable Ivory x 6
1 in stock
Vegetable Ivory buttons are made from the seed of the Ivory Nut Palm which grows in South America, especially in Equador. Quite a treasure, since large areas of these forests are being cleared, destroying many species of trees. The outer shell of the seed is sometimes kept on, but mostly removed. There are four or five seeds in each outer shell. When young and soft these tagua nuts are eaten, but when they are mature they become extremely hard and are known as vegetable ivory. They are used for carving and making buttons.
These vintage buttons are like round balls and are 10mm diameter. They are whistle buttons which have one hole in the top and two holes in the bottom, which means the thread is hidden inside the button. Excellent condition. $5 for card of 6.
