Description

USA, St Louis Kroger Store Bread Token.  Good for one loaf of bread.  Aluminium.  25mm diameter.  Circa 1930’s.

In 1883 Barney Kroger invested his life savings of $372 to open a grocery store at 66 Pearl Steet in downtown Cincinnati.  The son of a merchant, he ran his business with a simple motto:  Be particular.  Never sell anything you would not want yourself.” Now in 2020 with nearly 2,500 stores in 31 states under two dozen banners and annual sales of more than $70 billion, Kroger today is one of the USA’s largest retailers.

Back in 1900 Kroger stores baked their own bread and sold meats and groceries under the one roof, unheard of at the time.  In the 1930’s instore taste testing and samples were a new idea, in the 1970’s they were the first to use electronic scanners.  This bread token is a little piece of history!
