“In Flanders fields the poppies blow; between the crosses, row on row…” John McCrae’s immortal 1915 poem ‘In Flanders Field’ was inspired by a massive early bloom of poppies on the battlefields of the Western Front. It is said the churning of the soil on the battlefield helped millions of dormant poppy seeds germinate, coating the battlefields and freshly dug cemetaries in a bloom of red dancing poppies. Today these beautiful flowers are a symbol of remembrance.
