Between 1939 and 1945 almost one million Australian men and women served in the Second World War. Initially the war centered on campaigns against Germany, Italy and the Vichy French in Europe, the Mediterranean & North Africa,but in December 1941 Japan’s entry into the war saw much of Australia’s military return to fight in the Asia Pacific. The ‘War in Europe’ ended with Germany’s surrender on 7th May, 1945. Japan’s surrender came on 14th August 1945. Australia paid a price for freedom. The names of 39,652 men and women died in, or as a result of the Second World War, will live forever on our National Roll of Honour.
