Australia’s victory at Kokoda in 1942 was one of the most significant batles in the Asia-Pacific War.  Defending Port Moresby denied Japan a foothold on Australia’s doorstep.  A seaborne invasion force was turned back in early May by Australian and U.S. naval forces.  Japan launched an overland attack via the Kokoda Track, across the precipitous Owen Stanley Ranges on 21st July.  Despite progressing across the ranges they were ultimately pushed back and defeated after months of hard fighting.  In August Japan tried to capture air fields at Milne Bay, 390km southeast of Port Moresby, which could have delivered air support for the Kokoda campaign, but that force too was defeated.  Japan’s quest for Port Moresby ended with Kokoda.
