Description

During the Second World War some 10,000 Royal Australian Airforce aircrew served in the Royal Air Force Bomber Command.  The ‘tour’ consisted of 30 missions – mainly night attacks over German territory where aircrew faced anti-aircraft guns; attack from fast moving German night fighters, or the possibility mid air collision.  The introduction of the Avro Lancaster and Halifax II bombers in 1942 allowed bigger payloads to be dropped deep in German territory.  Australians flew in the world’s first 1,000 bomber air raid over Cologne, Germany, in May.  Crew were also recruited to the elite ‘Dam Buster’ squadron. Of all Australians lost in the Second World War more than one in ten served with Bomber Command.
