“Before El Alamein we never had a victory.  After Alamein we never had a defeat.”  Britain’s wartime Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.

The Battle of El Alamein on the Mediterranean coast, 260km north west of Cairo, was a turning point in the Second World War.  In November 1942 the Eight Army of General Bernard “Monty” Montgomery defeated the advancing Afrika Korps of the “Desert Fox”, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel.  From July until November both armies engaged in a massive series of attacks and counter attacks with infantry, armour and air power.  Australia’s 9th Division, as well as No3. and 450 RAAF.  Squadrons were at the centre of a victory that inspired an Empire.
