King George VI Visit to Australia Cup & Saucer

Cup & Saucer Commemorative from the Royal Visit of King George VI & Queen Elizabeth (Queen Mother) in 1949 – except it never happened.  The visit was cancelled due to the ill health of the king who died a few years later.  The souveniers however had already been made.  Many were destroyed, rendered useless, but some survived, having already been purchased by Australians excited by the pending visit.  This beautifully painted cup and saucer was made by Royal Grafton, founded in 1876 in Staffordshire, England.  They continued in production up until 1972.
