The stand measures 7cm in height and the ball 4cm diameter – just 11cm in height overall.  Five layers in the ball. No apparent damage apart from one tusk missing on an elephant.

Made from ivory likely around the turn of century late 1890’s to 1900’s.  Typically Chinese puzzle balls have three to seven layers of concentric hollow spheres.  Using a small ‘L’ shaped tool, the artisan would start with a solid ball of ivory and carefully ‘drill’ through to the centre of the object.  The long and meticulous process of crafting these balls, were only completed by highly skilled artisans.
