Realistic or ‘Goofy Buttons’
Goofy buttons represent in miniature, a hat, dog, horse, flower, person, sport, military or any other real object one might name. They date back to the 1930s – 1950s. Realistic sets (Goofies) were issued on small sell cards sometimes with the name of the set and some embellishment on the card. Some cards were very plain.
Shirley says, “I have spent many years finding sets of Goofy Buttons. You can see them on the ‘display only cards’ in the Cabinets of Curiosities at Morpeth Antique Centre, NSW. If you are lucky you will find a set or a card of mixed vintage Goofy Buttons here to purchase. They are becoming more collectable, higher in price, and very hard to find”.
The term ‘Goofies’ was coined by Dorothy Foster Brown in 1942 and is still used today by button collectors, along with the term Realistic. In Australia we would call them Novelty Buttons.
Since c1995 a lot of novelty buttons have been made as ‘clip-togethers’ or ‘snap-togethers’. They are two colour, two part buttons which snap together with the shank on one part. The two parts allow for easier dyeing during manufacture. Nice buttons which will be collectables of the future. They are available at Buttons-at-Morpeth at Morpeth Antique Centre.
