Description

Antique Lithograph Book Plate from 1893-1897.  120 years old.  This image was reproduced in a children’s book from an original watercolour drawing created by Maud Humphrey in 1893.  The Book of Pets was published in 1897 by Maud Humphrey & E.S. Tucker.  Many years ago someone took the book apart and kept this beautiful book plate – now an antique.  It would look beautiful framed and hung on the wall, or use for a craft project or greeting card.  There were originally 12 full colour plates and 12 more full colour illustrations within the text of Tucker.  It comes with a copy of the title page and the original dedication which reads “For Master Claude Lucas.  Wishing him a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  W.A. Cuthell. Dec. 1897.”

Maud Humphrey (1868-1940) was a suffragette, commercial illustrator and the mother of Humphrey Bogart.  Born in Rochester, New York to John Perkins Humphrey and Frances Dewey Churchill, she was an American commercial artist, illustrator and watercolourist.  She studied at the Art Students League of New York and in Paris at the Julien Academy.  She won a Louis Prang and Company competition for Christmas card design and then began working for publisher FA Stokes as an illustrator.  From the 1880’s through the 1920’s, her work included child portraits, calendars, greeting cards, postcards, fashion magazines and more than 20 story books.  She earned more than $50,000 a year while her husband’s surgical practice brought in $20,000 a year.
