Description

Enamel Badge measures 1cm wide x 2cm high.  The information on the back of the card reads, ‘The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) was established in 1911, and in 1913 the fleet steamed through Sydney Heads for the first time.  The RAN was formed to take charge of Australia’s naval defence from the Royal Navy, which had been carrying out these duties since 1788.  The RAN first saw action in WWI, where it distinguished itself in three oceans.  Between the wars the RAN experienced great growth during the 1920’s, but was forced to shrink in the 1930’s due to the financial situation of the time. (The Great Depression.)  Entering WWII the RAN was not in the same situationit was in 1914.  During the war the size of the RAN grew to over 300 vessels of virtually all classes.  After WWII the RAN saw action in Korea, Vietnam, and other smaller conflicts.  Today the RAN fields a modern force, widely regarded as oneof the most powerful forces in the Asia Pacific Region.’
