In the first years of the Second World War much of the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet operated far beyond Australia’s waters.  But when Japan entered the war in december 1941 Navy’s focus turned to the protection of Australia.  In 1942 her ships and people were instrumental in securing Port Moresby, supporting the landing US Marines at Guadalcanal, and in protecting Australia’s sea lanes.  But Australia’s Navy paid a high price.  Four of her major ships sunk in 1942 were lost to the Pacific War, including HMAS Canberra, Australia’s biggest warship lost in combat.  By war’s end the RAN lost more than 30 vessels and almost 2,200 men and women.
