On 19th February 1942, Japan attacked mainland Australia with more planes than at Pearl Harbour 10 weeks earlier.  The attack on Darwin was the first of many deadly air raids across the north.  Japanese submarines also attacked the east coast.  In May three midget submarines penetrated Sydney Harbour and torpedoed and sank HMAS Kuttabul.  Soon after IJN submarines shelled Sydney and Newcastle, and in the waters off Australia, they attacked Allied shipping. Over the course of the war many civilian and military personnel were lost in air and sea attacks.  Japan’s final air raid on the mainland was at darwin in November 1943.  The Japanese and German navies continued to attack shipping until late in the war.
